Emory Endocrine Head and Neck Surgery Clinic: Thyroid and Parathyroid

Overview

Endocrine head and neck surgeons from the Emory Department of Otolaryngology are the primary surgical staff of the Emory Endocrine Head and Neck Surgery Clinic. Located at Emory University Hospital Midtown, the clinic is led by Amy Y. Chen, MD, MPH, Willard and Lillian Hackerman Professor of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, and is a service provided by Winship Cancer Institute, the first and only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center in Georgia.

Winship serves as the coordinating center for Emory University's vast array of resources in medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, and other cancer care subspecialties. This multidisciplinary environment allows the Endocrine Head and Neck Surgery Clinic to offer its patients individualized care plans based on collaborative treatment approaches.

Winship also has a robust and thriving research enterprise, which focuses on translating research discoveries from the bench to the bedside, thereby giving patients access to the latest advances in cancer therapies and the opportunity to participate in unique national, international, and institutional clinical trials.

Services

As a patient-centered practice, the Endocrine Head and Neck Surgery Clinic is equipped to provide state-of-the-art care and surgical consultation for thyroid and parathyroid disorders. The clinic features same-day, in-office ultrasound services that allow any pathology that may be present to be visualized and then discussed between the patient and surgeon. If a biopsy is determined as the next best step, it can often be scheduled as an in-office procedure as well.

The clinic offers advanced laryngoscopy services, and has a fully equipped laryngoscopy cart capable of performing complex diagnostics and imaging to view any associated airway or laryngeal issues.

Cases involving thyroid malignancies are presented and discussed by the clinic's surgeons and affiliated endocrinologists, radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and nursing partners at Winship's Multidisciplinary Thyroid Tumor Conference. These conferences contribute to offering the most effective treatment options for our patients.

Scheduling

The clinic works to schedule patients within one week of referral, and only asks that medical records and any prior pathology slides and radiology imaging be provided before the appointment to help ensure a timely and comprehensive plan of care once the first visit is completed.
