Chairman's welcome:
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for inquiring about the Otolaryngology - Head & Neck
Surgery residency at Emory. The Department was formed just eight
years ago and energizing and improving the residency was our first
priority. The residency is fully accredited by the ACGME and contains
all the components one would expect of a 21st century program. As
confirmation of our success the size of the residency has been increased.
The first objective of the program is to provide each resident with
outstanding training – through exposure to experienced and
highly qualified faculty both in the operating room and the busy
outpatient clinic. We have faculty subspecializing in all aspects
of otolaryngology training including head & neck surgery, rhinology,
laryngology, otology/neurotology, vestibular disorders, facial plastics
and pediatric otolaryngology. Weekly didactic sessions provide education
in basic and clinical sciences.
The second objective is to provide a meaningful research experience
in the PGY-4 (Oto-3) year. This experience is a dedicated block
of research time which can be in the department’s own laboratories
or in a number of others around the Emory campus, including the
Winship Cancer Institute, Yerkes National Primate Research Center,
Emory Medical School Basic Science Departments and the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
As Chair of the department, I speak for each of the faculty’s
commitment to train you to be able to go where you want to go and
do what you want to do after the Emory residency. We have graduates
in some of the most prestigious fellowships, in academic practice
and in excellent private practices around the country. We look forward
to meeting you in person and showing you what we are building at
Emory.
Sincerely,
Douglas
E. Mattox, M.D.
